Excitation of Neutron Star Oscillations by an Orbiting Particle

چکیده
The excitation of neutron stars is expected to be an important source of gravitational radiation. Of fundamental importance is then to investigate mechanisms that trigger oscillations in neutron stars in order to characterize the emitted radiation. We present results from a numerical study of the even-parity gravitational radiation generated from a particle orbiting a neutron star. We focus our investigation on those conditions on the orbital parameters that favor the excitation of w-modes. We find that, for astrophysically realistic conditions, there is practically no w-mode contribution to the emitted radiation. Only for particles with ultra-relativistic orbital speeds 0:9 , the w-mode does significantly contribute to the total emitted gravitational energy. We also stress the importance of setting consistent initial configurations.

The effective inertial acceleration due to oscillations of the gravitational potential: footprints in the solar system
The conjecture is considered that every body induces the wave field which imposes oscillations on the gravitational potential of a body. The function for oscillations is chosen to prevent the gravitational collapse of the matter at the nucleus energy density. The conjecture leads to modification of the Newtonian gravity. The effect is too small to be seen in observations in the solar system. Os...
متن کاملDeveloping a model for neutron star oscillations following starquakes
Glitches – sudden increases in spin rate – are observed in many pulsars. One mechanism advanced to explain glitches in the youngest pulsars is that they are caused by a starquake, a sudden rearrangement of the crust of the neutron star. Starquakes have the potential to excite some of the oscillation modes of the neutron star, which means that they are of interest as a source of gravitational wa...
متن کاملX-ray aurora in neutron star magnetospheres
The discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) has been reported and discussed in recent studies in theoretical and observational astrophysics. The Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer has observed oscillations in the X-ray flux of about 20 accreting neutron stars. These oscillations are very strong and remarkably coherent. Their frequencies range from ∼ 10 Hz to ...
متن کاملR-Modes on Rapidly Rotating, Relativistic Stars: I. Do Type-I Bursts Excite Modes in the Neutron-Star Ocean?
During a Type-I burst, the turbulent deflagation front may excite waves in the neutron star ocean and upper atmosphere with frequencies, ω ∼ 1 Hz. These waves may be observed as highly coherent flux oscillations during the burst. The frequencies of these waves changes as the upper layers of the neutron star cool which accounts for the small variation in the observed QPO frequencies. In principl...
متن کاملGravitational waves from a particle orbiting around a rotating black hole: Post-Newtonian expansion.
Using the Teukolsky and Sasaki-Nakamura equations for the gravitational perturbation of the Kerr spacetime, we calculate the post-Newtonian expansion of the energy and angular momentum luminosities of gravitational waves from a test particle orbiting around a rotating black hole up through P 5/2 N order beyond the quadrupole formula. We apply a method recently developed by Sasaki to the case of...
